Jinan University, Guangzhou, China: Visiting lecturer, International School, 2015 to present. Fall 2015: taught the first three professional courses in a new international journalism program: “English News Gathering and Writing,” “International News Analysis and Comparison” and “Survey of English-Speaking Cultures.” Also taught freshman oral English; a special lecture for graduate students in the School of Journalism and Communication; and workshops on writing for the public to International School administrators and graduate students in the translation program. Presented weekly movie night of films set in the media world. Spring 2018 and 2019: taught six-week intensive, “Media Law and Ethics”; conducted six workshops for the Institute of Economic and Social Research on academic and business writing; conducted workshop for students in the translation program on the art of translation. “English News Gathering and Writing” online, fall 2020; “News Commentary” online, fall 2021 and 2022.

University of British Columbia, Vancouver: Canwest Visiting Professor in arts and culture journalism, Graduate School of Journalism, Vancouver, spring semester 2012.

Colorado State University: CSU/Gannett Foundation professional in residence, February and March 1987. Duties included 20 guest lectures in reporting and editing classes; counseling students; advising the student newspaper staff; and conducting a two-day editing seminar for Colorado newspaper editors.

Emerson College, Boston: Adjunct instructor, Division of Mass Communications, 1986-87. Taught “Fundamentals of Reporting,” “Public Affairs Reporting,” “Senior Print Lab” (editing and graphics) and directed study in arts criticism.

ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES

Specializing in advanced courses in English for speaking and writing, media, the arts and English-speaking cultures. Certificate in English language teaching from the New School, January 2008.  Courses included grammar, pronunciation, writing, principles of language learning and teaching, methods, and learner assessment. Professional development workshops in one-on-one teaching, fall 2009, and using technology in the classroom, summer 2011.

University of Lower Silesia, Wroclaw, Poland: As supervised practicum, team-taught an intensive three-week class for true beginners, summer 2007. Instructor of the advanced summer intensive, August 2008 and August 2009. Intensives in English for special purposes: “Cultural Backgrounds of English-Speaking Nations,” October 2010; “English for Professional Purposes,” October 2011; “English for the Media,” July 2013.  “English for the Media,” “English for the Arts” and “English for Academia and Beyond” as a Fulbright senior specialist, spring 2016; “English Writing: Avoiding the Trouble Spots,” August 2017.

American Language Program, Columbia University:  As part of methods course at the New School, taught a 10-week writing lab for intermediate and advanced students, spring semester 2007. Adjunct instructor, summer 2008,  teaching low intermediate level, six hours a week; summer 2011 and 2012, teaching an advanced three-week intensive, “English for Professional Purposes: Business,” 18 hours a week. Occasional guest lecturer on “The Changing Media.”

Hunan University of Science and Technology, Xiangtan, China: Oral English instructor, spring semester 2010, teaching 16 hours a week. Taught sections of Oral English for sophomores; one for postgraduates; two in advanced audio-visual and speaking lab for juniors; one in “Cultural Backgrounds of English-Speaking Countries.”

Private lessons in English and beginning French, in person and online, to speakers of Chinese, Japanese, Polish, Spanish, Italian and Czech.

BUSINESS COMMUNICATION

Baruch College, New York: Continuing education instructor. Taught “Communicating About U.S. Business and Politics,” a required course in the Contemporary American Business Practices certificate program, Division of Continuing and Professional Studies, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020 (online); “Grammar for Better Professional Communication,” 2017, 2019 and 2020 (online).
